Chapter 10 - Sunlight on Sophie’s Garden

Two years after that dark afternoon by the dining table, the warm summer sun bathed the sprawling limestone terrace and blooming rose gardens of Daniel and Sophie’s new coastal estate in Cape May, New Jersey.
The crisp Atlantic breeze carried the sweet scent of saltwater, blooming white jasmine, and fresh strawberries, while the rhythmic sound of gentle ocean waves echoed in the distance.
Running freely across the lush green lawn was seven-year-old Sophie.
She was tall, strong, and bursting with vibrant health, her lungs completely clear and thriving thanks to the expert care of Dr. Sterling. She wore a cheerful yellow sundress and white sneakers, chasing a golden retriever puppy across the grass, her laughter ringing pure, sweet, and untainted under the clear blue sky.
Under the shaded cedar pergola, a grand banquet table was laid with fresh fruit tarts, warm blueberry muffins, and chilled sparkling apple cider, celebrating Sophie’s first-grade honor roll award and the opening of the Sophie Vance Pediatric Respiratory Center.
Daniel walked out onto the cedar deck, wearing a relaxed linen shirt and dark trousers, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade.
He sat on the wide steps, watching his daughter run without pausing, without gasping, and without fear.
Sophie came sprinting up the terrace steps on her fast little feet, jumping straight into her father’s lap with a burst of pure, ringing giggles.
“Daddy! Look! Barnaby and I found three giant seashells on the beach for your desk!”
Daniel laughed—a deep, joyful sound that came from the very bottom of his heart—and wrapped his strong, loving arms around his daughter, pulling her close against his chest.
“They are the most beautiful treasures in the world, Sophie,” Daniel whispered, kissing her soft cheek.
Sophie leaned her head against her father’s steady, powerful heartbeat, looking out over the sparkling blue ocean where the waves danced in the golden sunshine.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“I can breathe all the way to the top of the sky,” Sophie smiled softly, her eyes glowing with boundless love and peace.
Daniel tightened his embrace, resting his chin gently against her hair beneath the endless light.

“And you will always breathe free, my brave girl,” Daniel murmured. “Always.”
The cold attics, the cruel locks, the withheld medicines, and the dark shadows of betrayal were gone forever. Standing tall in the warmth of truth, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unconditional love, they were finally whole—a father and daughter united forever in everlasting light, peace, and triumphant freedom.
