Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT HER FATHER DISAPPEARED
Nina called her father immediately.
No answer.
She tried again.
Voicemail.
Her stomach tightened.
Thomas usually answered after the second ring.
She called the neighbor.
Mrs. Alvarez checked the apartment.
Then called back.
"Nina, he's not here."
Nina froze.
"What?"
"His coat is gone. So is his walking cane."
Nina grabbed her bag.
She called the police.
Then called Adrien.
He answered on the first ring.
"Nina?"
"My father is missing."
His voice changed.
"Where are you?"
"At the office."
"Have you contacted the police?"
"Yes."
"Good."
He paused.
"Don't leave alone."
Nina swallowed.
"Adrien, I think someone took him."
Silence.
Then he asked:
"Why?"
She told him about the email.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
"Send it to Vivien and the investigators. Preserve the original message."
Nina nodded.
"Okay."
His voice softened.
"Nina, listen to me."
She closed her eyes.
"We're going to take this seriously."
Her voice broke.
"He's all I have."
Adrien was silent for a moment.

"I understand."
