Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE MADE IN THE RAIN

One year after the diner reopened, Matteo took Lena back to the place where they first met.

A small park overlooking the river.

It was raining.

Of course.

Lena laughed when she saw the weather.

“You planned this?”

Matteo smiled.

“Not the rain.”

She shook her head.

“You always did have terrible timing.”

He laughed.

They walked beneath a shared umbrella.

The river moved quietly below.

Three years earlier, they'd stood in the same park after Matteo returned from hiding.

He had been injured.

Exhausted.

Ashamed.

Lena had cried.

Then shouted.

Then held him.

He had promised to leave the criminal world behind.

He'd meant it.

But he hadn't understood how difficult keeping that promise would be.

Now he looked at her.

“Lena.”

She turned.

“Yes?”

“I owe you an apology.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Another one?”

He laughed softly.

“Probably several.”

She smiled.

“Go on.”

He took a breath.

“When we married, I thought protecting you meant making sure nobody dared hurt you.”

His expression softened.

“But that meant people feared me more than they respected you.”

Lena looked at him.

He continued.

“The night at the diner, those men weren't afraid of hurting a waitress.”

His voice trembled.

“They were afraid of hurting my wife.”

Lena nodded.

“I know.”

He looked down.

“That was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He took her hand.

“I can't change what happened.”

“No.”

“But I can spend the rest of my life making sure I never confuse fear with respect again.”

Lena's eyes filled.

Matteo reached into his pocket.

A small velvet box.

She froze.

“Matteo.”

He smiled.

“I know we're already married.”

She laughed through tears.

“Yes, I remember.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple gold band.

Engraved with three words.

STILL CHOOSING YOU.

Lena covered her mouth.

Matteo's voice trembled.

“I don't want to promise you a perfect life.”

He looked into her eyes.

“I want to promise you honesty. Patience. And a home where you never have to be afraid of the man standing beside you.”

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

“Lena Marquez, will you marry me again?”

She laughed.

Then cried.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

“Really?”

“Yes, you ridiculous man.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then kissed her beneath the rain.

For a moment, the city disappeared.

There was only the river.

The umbrella.

The man she'd loved through darkness.

And the future they had chosen together.

When they finally separated, Lena smiled.

“One condition.”

Matteo laughed.

“Of course.”

She looked at him.

“You still have to wash dishes at the diner.”

He sighed dramatically.

“Every Friday?”

“Every Friday.”

He smiled.

“Deal.”

And for the first time, Matteo understood that the best promises weren't made in boardrooms or whispered during dangerous nights.

They were made in ordinary places.

May you like

Under ordinary rain.

Between two people who had learned that love was a choice made again and again.
