Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MATTEO MARQUEZ

The investigation into Gabriel Voss exposed more than forged contracts.
It revealed years of financial misconduct.
Property seizures.
Fraudulent security agreements.
And a pattern of intimidation around the waterfront.
Several former employees testified.
Some admitted they had followed orders because they feared losing their jobs.
Others described threats against their families.
Matteo listened to the reports with growing shame.
He recognized the culture.
The silence.
The fear.
The belief that powerful men could do whatever they wanted.
He had helped build that world.
Even if Gabriel had expanded it after he left.
One evening, Matteo sat at the kitchen table with Daniel Price.
The attorney reviewed documents.
“Some of these practices began before you left.”
Matteo nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You may have legal exposure.”
“I understand.”
The attorney hesitated.
“You could fight every allegation.”
Matteo looked toward the living room.
Lena was reading.
He took a breath.
“I'll answer for what I did.”
Daniel stared.
“Matteo—”
“No excuses.”
His voice remained steady.
“I can't demand accountability from Gabriel while pretending my own past doesn't matter.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Then we'll handle it properly.”
The months that followed were difficult.
Matteo cooperated with investigators.
He faced scrutiny.
He lost business relationships.
Some former associates called him a traitor.
Others mocked him for becoming soft.
But he continued.
Lena watched.
She knew change wasn't simple.
It wasn't a speech.
Or a promise.
Or one good decision.
It was hundreds of difficult choices.
Made when nobody was watching.
One afternoon, Matteo returned home exhausted.
He sat on the couch.
Lena brought him tea.
“Bad day?”
He nodded.
“Very.”
She sat beside him.
“Want to talk?”
He looked at her.
Then said:
“I used to think being feared meant being respected.”
Lena nodded.
“I know.”
He stared at his hands.
“Now I wonder how many people were afraid to tell me the truth.”
She considered this.
“Probably more than you want to know.”
He laughed sadly.
“Probably.”
She took his hand.
“But you're listening now.”
He looked at her.
“Is that enough?”
She shook her head.
“Not by itself.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
She smiled.
“But it's a start.”
He leaned against her.
For a long time, they sat together.
Outside, children played on the sidewalk.
A neighbor watered flowers.
A delivery truck stopped across the street.

Ordinary life continued.
And Matteo realized he wanted nothing more.
