Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT NOBODY RAN

Detective Ellis took the threat seriously.
The community hall was evacuated.
The fundraising dinner scheduled for the next evening was postponed.
Police increased patrols.
Investigators reviewed nearby surveillance footage.
Lena hated canceling the event.
But she understood.
Safety mattered more than pride.
Matteo stood beside her as she called volunteers.
He didn't argue.
Didn't insist he could protect everyone himself.
He simply helped.
The next afternoon, officers located a suspicious vehicle near the hall.
Its driver attempted to leave.
Police stopped him.
Inside were materials connected to the threatened attack.
The driver was arrested.
Investigators later linked him to Blackwater.
Lena sat in her kitchen when Nora called.
Her hands trembled.
“Was anyone hurt?”
“No.”
Lena closed her eyes.
“Thank God.”
Nora continued.
“Your decision to report the threat immediately gave us time to act.”
Lena looked toward Matteo.
He was standing beside the window.
Listening.
She exhaled.
“Thank you.”
After the call, Matteo approached.
He took her hands.
“You saved people.”
Lena shook her head.
“I made a phone call.”
He smiled.
“Sometimes that's enough.”
She looked at him.
For years, she'd believed bravery meant standing up to danger directly.
Now she understood that courage could also mean asking for help.
Trusting professionals.
Refusing to let fear make decisions.
Later that evening, Gabriel Voss was arrested.
He was taken into custody outside a private airport.
Authorities alleged he had directed a conspiracy involving forged contracts, intimidation, arson, and threats against witnesses.
The case would take time.
There would be hearings.
Trials.
Appeals.
But Gabriel's ability to threaten Lena and Matteo had been sharply reduced.
Matteo watched the arrest on television.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then Lena sat beside him.
“How do you feel?”
He exhaled.
“Strange.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn't have to hurt him.”
She smiled.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“And he still lost.”
Lena nodded.
“Because other people did their jobs.”
Matteo laughed softly.
“Apparently.”
She leaned against him.
For the first time in weeks, the house felt quiet.
Not empty.
Not tense.
Just quiet.
Matteo wrapped an arm around her.
“Lena?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
She looked up.
“For what?”
“For not letting me become him.”
Her eyes filled.
“You made that choice.”
He nodded.
“Because you reminded me I could.”
She smiled.
Then kissed him.
Outside, rain began falling.
Softly.
May you like
Against the windows.
And for the first time since the night at the diner, Lena didn't feel afraid of the sound.
