Chapter 7 - The Forged Signature and the Stolen Coverage

The room descended into a tense, fragile silence, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator and the quiet breathing of the twins.
Julian looked down at the loaded Beretta on the floor, then at my empty hands, and finally at Evelyn.
Slowly, cautiously, Julian lowered the steel lug wrench, setting it onto the small dining table beside the doorway.
“Leo, Mia,” Julian said, his voice instantly softening into a gentle, paternal warmth as he turned toward the children. “Go into your bedroom with Mrs. Higgins and finish your strawberry pancakes. Daddy Julian needs to talk to Mommy’s guest for a minute.”
Leo peeked around Evelyn’s hip, looking at Julian. “Is the big man nice, Daddy Julian?”
Julian hesitated, his eyes meeting mine for a brief, complex second.
“We’re going to find out, buddy,” Julian answered quietly. “Go on, take Mia inside.”
Evelyn kissed both of their foreheads, ushering the toddlers through the bedroom door. The elderly neighbor, a kind-faced woman with silver hair, pulled the door closed, leaving the three of us alone in the sunlit kitchen.
Evelyn leaned against the kitchen counter, crossing her arms tightly over her chest, her breathing still ragged and shallow.
“Why are you here, Adrian?” she whispered, refusing to look directly at me. “Did your mother decide that two children in Boston were too much of an embarrassment to leave alive?”
I stood up slowly from the floor, my joints stiff, taking a seat at the small laminate table.
“Evelyn,” I said, looking at her with every ounce of sincerity in my soul. “I swear to you on my father’s grave, on my life, and on whatever honor I have left: I never saw that cancellation notice. I never authorized anyone to touch your healthcare. I never knew about the pregnancy.”
She let out a harsh, bitter sob, shaking her head. “You expect me to believe that?! Victoria came to my hospital bed in Lincoln Park forty-eight hours before I fled! She threw the cancellation notice on my bed! She told me you had already signed the authorization to strip my coverage!”
I reached into my coat pocket, pulling out the encrypted digital tablet Marcus had prepared.
I unlocked the screen and laid it flat on the table, turning it toward her and Julian.
“Look at the authentication logs, Evelyn,” I said.
Displayed on the screen were the high-resolution forensic scans of the cancellation order dated three years ago:
The Signature Analysis: The signature was a vector-plotted reproduction created using an automated signature pen (autopen) owned exclusively by Victoria Moretti’s private legal foundation.
The Terminal IP: The document was uploaded from a secure IP address located inside the private residence of Victoria Moretti in Lake Forest, Illinois, while I was physically in Palermo, Sicily, attending an international maritime summit.
The Internal Email Trail: A series of encrypted emails between Victoria Moretti and Julian Vance, containing the following message:
‘The girl is six months along. If Adrian discovers the pregnancy, he will never agree to the alliance with the Castiglione family in New York. Terminate her medical trusts immediately. Cut off her credit facilities. Ensure she leaves the state without liquid capital.’
Evelyn stared at the glowing screen.
Her hands began to tremble so violently that she had to grip the edge of the table to keep her balance.
Her eyes scanned the dates, the IP logs, and the cold, monstrous words typed by the woman who had presided over our family dinners with pearls and polite smiles.
“She… she did this?” Evelyn whispered, her voice barely carrying across the table. “Without you knowing?”
“I was in Sicily for three weeks,” I answered, tears burning behind my eyes. “When I returned to Chicago, my mother told me you had cleaned out your personal accounts, taken a train to New York, and filed for divorce because you couldn't handle the pressure of the syndicate. She showed me a forged separation agreement with your signature on it.”

I buried my face in my hands, my shoulders shaking.
“I was an arrogant, blind fool, Evelyn. I was so angry, so consumed by my own wounded pride, that I believed her. I never investigated. I never questioned her. I let my own mother rob me of my wife and my children.”
