Chapter 13 - The Return of the Sovereign King

The boardroom descended into a dead, suffocating freeze.

Victoria Moretti’s gold pen slipped from her fingers, clattering across the mahogany wood, staining the proxy agreement with a pool of black ink.

Walking through the clearing smoke, radiating sovereign, terrifying power, was myself.

My dark suit was immaculate, my posture straight and commanding, but my eyes carried the cold, absolute judgment of an emperor who had returned from the dead to reclaim his throne.

Flanking me were Senior Detective Marcus Stone of the Federal-State Task Force and Chief Federal Litigator Julian Hayes.

Behind us, pushed roughly forward by two tactical operators, stumbled Julian Vance. His clothes were torn, his wrists bound in heavy iron transport chains, his face covered in bruises and dried tears.

Arthur Castiglione’s scotch glass fell from his hand, shattering across the imported wool rug.

“Adrian…?” Castiglione stammered, backing away toward the panoramic windows, his face turning an ashen shade of curdled milk.

Victoria rose from the head of the table, her hands trembling as she smoothed her skirt, attempting to summon her formidable aristocratic composure.

“Adrian!” Victoria gasped, her voice shrill with indignation. “What is the meaning of this barbarism?! You breach our executive boardroom with tactical weapons?! I am your mother!”

I walked slowly down the length of the sixty-foot table, each strike of my polished leather shoes ringing off the vaulted ceiling with the measured cadence of an approaching execution.

I stopped three inches from where she stood.

I did not raise my voice. I did not shout.

I reached into my breast pocket with my left hand, pulling out three items, and dropped them one by one onto her porcelain saucer:

The spent .45 caliber shell casing from the Tremont Street stairwell.

The forged healthcare cancellation order bearing her private autopen certificate.

A certified digital confession recorded by Julian Vance during the flight from Boston.

The porcelain saucer cracked in half under the weight of the brass shell.

“You sent armed contractors to execute my children in their beds, Victoria,” I spoke. My voice was a sub-zero whisper that seemed to pull all the warmth out of the room.

Victoria’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at Julian Vance, who was weeping on the floorboards, refusing to meet her eyes.

“Adrian… listen to me,” Victoria stammered, her voice cracking in hysterical desperation. “They were bastards! She was an insignificant clinic nurse who wanted to drag our bloodline into the dirt! I did it to protect our empire! I did it for you!”

“You did it for your own twisted vanity,” I replied with chilling finality. “And today, your empire ends.”
