Graham Mercer was arrested three weeks later.
Investigators uncovered evidence connecting his company to payments made through Nolan's consulting network.
Several communications suggested an effort to undermine Adrian's business restructuring.
The staged dinner had been intended to create damaging allegations against Adrian.
Nolan had planned to use Emma's false statement to pressure Adrian into selling valuable assets at a reduced price.
When Emma refused, the plan escalated into threats and kidnapping.
Nolan was arrested after attempting to leave the country.
He denied the accusations.
But investigators had recovered financial records, messages, surveillance footage, and the forged statement.
Emma gave a formal account of what had happened.
She was frightened.
But she told the truth.
Adrian attended the proceedings with his attorney.
He didn't try to intimidate witnesses.
He didn't interfere with investigators.
He allowed the evidence to speak.
For a man who had spent years controlling every room he entered, it was an unfamiliar kind of restraint.
One evening, Emma asked him:
Why didn't you just make Nolan disappear?
Adrian looked at her.
Then signed:
Because that would make me exactly what he expected.
Emma studied him.
He continued.
I have spent too much of my life believing fear solves problems.
She smiled faintly.
