Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING WHERE EVERYONE WAS HEARD

Their wedding took place the following spring.
Not at the Voss mansion.
Not in a ballroom filled with politicians.
But in a garden beside Lake Michigan.
Emma wore a simple ivory dress.
Her mother sat in the front row.
Margaret Ellis cried before the ceremony even began.
Marcus stood beside Adrian.
And every guest received a printed program explaining that the vows would be delivered in American Sign Language and spoken English.
Professional interpreters were present.
But Adrian and Emma signed directly to each other.
When Emma reached him, Adrian smiled.
He signed:
You look beautiful.
She laughed softly.
You look nervous.
He nodded.
Terrified.
She squeezed his hands.
Good.
He laughed.
During their vows, Emma signed:
Adrian, the first night we met, I was frightened.
Her eyes filled.
I thought I had walked into a place where my voice didn't matter.
She paused.
Then you asked me one question.
Adrian watched her.
And you listened when I answered.
His eyes softened.
Emma continued.
I promise to listen to you.
To tell you the truth.
And to love you without ever trying to control who you are.
Adrian took her hands.
He signed:
Emma, you came into my home believing you were there to serve dinner.
A soft laugh moved through the guests.
He smiled.
But you gave me something nobody had given me in years.
Emma's eyes filled.
Honesty.
He paused.
You saw me as a man, not a reputation.
You spoke to me, not around me.
And you taught me that love isn't someone speaking for you.
He squeezed her hands.
It's someone making sure you're heard.
Emma cried.
They exchanged rings.
Then kissed.
And the guests applauded.
Some with their hands.
Some in the air.
Some using the visual applause of raised, waving hands.
Adrian looked around.
May you like
Then back at Emma.
And smiled.
