Chapter 6 - THE NURSE WHO VANISHED

Willa copied the documents with her phone and returned the originals to the cabinet.

She kept the flash drive.

Then she asked Teresa for one more favor.

“Can you help me find Olivia Marsh?”

Teresa hesitated.

“I don't know where she is.”

“But you know someone who might.”

Teresa looked away.

Then nodded.

“Her sister.”

Olivia's sister, Rachel Marsh, lived in a small apartment in Evanston.

Willa reached her through a public directory and arranged to meet at a coffee shop.

Rachel arrived wearing a navy coat.

She looked exhausted.

“Are you Willa Hayes?”

“Yes.”

Rachel sat.

“Olivia told me about you.”

Willa froze.

“What?”

Rachel nodded.

“She said your case was connected to Everett Kane.”

Willa leaned forward.

“Where is she?”

Rachel's eyes filled.

“I don't know.”

Willa's stomach dropped.

Rachel continued.

“Olivia called me six months ago. She said she had found something wrong with Everett's medication records.”

“What did she find?”

“She wouldn't tell me over the phone.”

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“She said she was meeting someone at St. Ambrose.”

Willa looked down at the parking receipt.

Then back at Rachel.

“Did she ever come home?”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

Willa showed Rachel the receipt.

Rachel began crying.

“That's the hospital.”

Willa nodded.

Rachel took a breath.

“There's something else.”

She opened her handbag.

Inside was a small envelope.

“Olivia mailed this to me the day before she disappeared.”

Willa took it.

Inside was a photograph of a medication cabinet.

And a handwritten note.

WHITFIELD IS NOT WORKING ALONE.

Beneath it were two initials.

G.A.

Willa stared.

Grant Allison.

The administrator who had helped destroy her career.

That evening, Willa returned to Ravenwood.

She found Everett alone.

She sat beside him.

“I found your letter.”

His hand moved.

“I know you were investigating Harold Fisk.”

One squeeze.

“I know Whitfield and Allison are involved.”

Another squeeze.

Willa leaned closer.

“Everett, did Sterling know?”

The pressure came immediately.

One squeeze.

Willa closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“I'm going to get you out of here.”

Everett's fingers trembled.

She held his hand.

“But I need to find someone who can protect you.”

For the first time, his lips moved.

Barely.

A breath escaped.

Willa leaned closer.

“Everett?”

His mouth moved again.

One word.

Almost inaudible.

“Daniel.”

Willa froze.

“Daniel who?”

Everett struggled.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Brother.”
