Chapter 12 - THE COUSIN WHO STOLE A KINGDOM
The investigation expanded rapidly.
Financial records showed that Sterling had diverted money through shell companies and fraudulent contracts.
Whitfield and Allison were connected to suspicious medical billing arrangements.
Evidence from Everett's records raised serious questions about his treatment.
Investigators also reopened aspects of the Harold Fisk case.
Sterling's lawyers denied wrongdoing.
They argued that Everett had been incapacitated and that Sterling had acted to protect the family's businesses.
But the documents told a different story.
One morning, Rebecca arrived at the hospital with news.
“Sterling has been arrested.”
Willa froze.
Everett looked up.
Rebecca continued.
“Federal charges connected to financial fraud and obstruction. The medical investigation is ongoing.”
Everett closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Then he whispered:
“Good.”
Whitfield was also placed under investigation.
His medical privileges were restricted while authorities and professional regulators reviewed his conduct.
Grant Allison resigned from St. Ambrose.
The hospital announced an independent review of historical cases.
Including Harold Fisk's death.
Willa sat beside Everett that evening.
“It's happening.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“The truth.”
Everett smiled faintly.
“About time.”
She laughed.
Then grew serious.
“Everett, there's something we need to talk about.”
He watched her.
“Our marriage.”
His expression changed.
Willa continued.
“Rebecca says it may not be valid. You couldn't consent.”
Everett looked down.
“I know.”
She swallowed.
“I don't want you to feel trapped.”
He looked up sharply.
“Trapped?”
She nodded.
“Sterling forced me into this. And he used your condition to arrange it.”
Everett was silent.
Then he whispered:
“You didn't choose it.”
“No.”
“Neither did I.”
She nodded.
He reached for her hand.
“Then we choose what happens next.”
May you like
Willa looked at him.
For the first time, she smiled without fear.
