Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO OPENED HIS EYES

The hospital room was quiet.

Real quiet.

Not the tense silence of Ravenwood, where every footstep felt like a warning.

Here, nurses entered openly.

Doctors explained their decisions.

Medication changes were reviewed by an independent team.

And Everett's condition was evaluated carefully.

Daniel stood beside Willa.

“He's still very ill.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“Recovery may take time.”

“I understand.”

Daniel looked at her.

“But the signs of awareness are encouraging.”

Willa closed her eyes.

For the first time in days, she allowed herself to hope.

Over the following weeks, Everett's medical team managed his treatment and assessed the effects of prolonged sedation and immobility.

His responses became more consistent.

He began following simple commands.

Then he opened his eyes.

Only for a moment.

But Willa was there.

She had been reading beside his bed when she noticed his eyelids move.

“Everett?”

His eyes opened.

Gray.

Unfocused.

Then they settled on her face.

Willa stopped breathing.

“Hi,” she whispered.

His lips moved.

No sound came.

She smiled through tears.

“Don't try to talk.”

He blinked.

Then his hand shifted.

Willa took it.

“I'm here.”

His fingers tightened.

Daniel entered moments later.

When he saw Everett's eyes open, he stopped.

For a long moment, neither brother spoke.

Then Daniel approached.

“Hey, Ev.”

Everett stared at him.

Daniel's voice broke.

“You picked a terrible time to make me come home.”

Everett's mouth moved.

A faint sound escaped.

Daniel laughed through tears.

“Yeah. I missed you too.”

Later that evening, Willa sat alone beside Everett.

His eyes were closed again, but he was resting.

She brushed a strand of hair from his forehead.

“You did it.”

His hand moved.

She smiled.

“I know. There's still a long road ahead.”

A pause.

Then Everett whispered something.

So faintly she almost missed it.

“Promise.”

Willa leaned closer.

“What?”

His eyes opened.

He looked at her.

“Altar.”

Willa felt tears rise.

He remembered.

The cheap dress.

The laughter.

The promise she had whispered beside his ear.

She swallowed.

“You heard me?”

Everett blinked.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Every word.”
