Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE BRAKES FAILED

Julian's car was involved in an incident on a rainy November evening.

He was leaving a business meeting when the driver noticed a problem with the vehicle's braking system.

The driver managed to stop safely.

No one was injured.

But the vehicle was taken for inspection.

Investigators later found evidence suggesting deliberate interference.

Julian stared at the report.

The word accident returned to him.

Sloane's voice.

Brynn's fear.

Tess's warning.

Nathaniel contacted the authorities.

The incident became part of a broader investigation.

Julian called Tess.

She answered immediately.

“Julian?”

He took a breath.

“I'm okay.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

He explained.

She went silent.

Then whispered:

“Oh my God.”

He heard her crying.

“Tess?”

She swallowed.

“I told you she said accident.”

“I know.”

“I thought maybe I misunderstood.”

“You didn't.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Thank you.”

She shook her head.

“Please be careful.”

His voice softened.

“I will.”

That night, Julian stood in the nursery.

He looked at the empty crib.

Then slowly removed the wooden sign bearing Oliver's name.

He held it against his chest.

And whispered:

May you like

“I'm sorry.”

For the first time, he began grieving a child who had never existed.
