Chapter 11 - THE WAITRESS WHO BECAME A NURSE

Spring arrived.
Tess completed another semester of nursing school.
She passed her clinical evaluations.
And accepted a position in a hospital training program.
On her last day at the senior care facility, Mrs. Hart hugged her.
“Don't forget us.”
Tess smiled through tears.
“Never.”
Julian attended a small celebration with Tess's classmates.
He stood quietly near the back.
No cameras.
No entourage.
Just a man holding flowers.
When Tess saw him, she smiled.
“You came.”
He nodded.
“Of course.”
She looked at the flowers.
“Those are beautiful.”
He smiled.
“You earned them.”
They walked outside together.
The city was warm.
Tess looked up at him.
“Julian.”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask something?”
“Anything.”
She hesitated.
“Are you happy?”
He considered.
“Not always.”
She nodded.
“But more often than before.”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
She took his hand.
He looked surprised.
May you like
Then smiled.
For the first time, neither felt the need to explain.
