Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT SHE CAME BACK

Caitlyn returned to Chicago on a cold November morning.

She wasn't returning to her old position.

After speaking with Evelyn, she had decided to resign as Darius's executive secretary.

The decision terrified her.

For three years, Hamilton Enterprises had paid Tommy's medical bills.

Provided stability.

Defined her entire schedule.

Leaving meant uncertainty.

But she no longer wanted a life where exhaustion proved her worth.

She submitted her resignation through the company's independent human resources department.

Darius received it that afternoon.

He read the letter twice.

Then called Caitlyn.

"Are you sure?"

She swallowed.

"Yes."

"Is it because of the investigation?"

"Partly."

"And the rest?"

She took a breath.

"I need to find out who I am when I'm not responsible for managing your life."

Darius was silent.

Then said, "That sounds reasonable."

She smiled sadly.

"I thought you'd be angry."

"Why?"

"Because you're losing your best assistant."

He laughed softly.

"I am."

Her eyes filled.

"But I'd rather lose an excellent assistant than watch you destroy your health trying to remain one."

Caitlyn pressed a hand against her chest.

"Thank you."

He hesitated.

"Would you consider consulting on the historical records investigation?"

"Under an independent contract?"

"Yes."

"With my own attorney reviewing the terms?"

"Absolutely."

She thought for a moment.

Then smiled.

"I might."

That evening, Caitlyn attended a public hearing concerning the old warehouse properties.

Several former employees had gathered to demand answers.

Families of those who died in the fire were present.

Investigators outlined the known financial irregularities.

An independent historian explained the property transfers.

Then Marianne Elmore's records were introduced as evidence.

Caitlyn sat in the audience, trembling.

Her mother's name appeared on the screen.

For years, she'd wondered why Marianne had been so secretive.

Now she watched officials discuss the documents her mother had preserved.

A reporter approached during a break.

"Miss Elmore, how does it feel to know your mother's records helped reopen the investigation?"

Caitlyn froze.

Cameras frightened her.

Public attention made her stomach twist.

Her first instinct was to disappear.

Then she remembered Tommy's message.

YOU NEED LIFE TOO.

She took a breath.

"My mother believed financial records should tell the truth," she said quietly.

The reporter leaned closer.

"Do you believe the Hamilton family covered up the fire?"

"I believe investigators should examine the evidence independently."

"Are you afraid of Darius Hamilton?"

Caitlyn paused.

She thought of the man who'd let her sleep against his shoulder.

The man who'd initially treated exhaustion as efficiency.

The man now dismantling portions of his business to uncover the truth.

"No," she said.

The reporter looked surprised.

"Why not?"

Caitlyn smiled faintly.

"Because I've learned that powerful people are still responsible for their choices."

The interview lasted less than two minutes.

But by evening, the clip had spread across Chicago.

People praised her composure.

Others questioned her motives.

Some speculated about her relationship with Darius.

Caitlyn ignored most of it.

Then Darius sent a message.

You spoke well.

She smiled.

I nearly fainted.

No one noticed.

That's reassuring.

A pause.

Then he wrote:

I'm proud of you.

Caitlyn stared at the screen.

For the first time, those words didn't feel like praise from an employer.

They felt personal.

And that was dangerous territory.

She considered her response carefully.

Then typed:

Thank you, Darius.

It was the first time she'd used his first name.

He looked at the message for a long time.

May you like

Then smiled.
