Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO KNEEL

A year after Caitlyn left Hamilton Enterprises, Darius asked her to move in with him.
She said no.
He looked surprised.
Then laughed.
"That was quick."
Caitlyn smiled.
"I love you."
"I know."
"But I love my apartment."
Darius glanced around the small living room.
The secondhand bookshelves.
The yellow curtains.
The tiny kitchen.
"I can see that."
She took his hand.
"For years, I lived around other people's schedules. This is the first place that's completely mine."
He nodded.
"Then keep it."
Caitlyn smiled.
"You're not upset?"
"No."
"Really?"
"Caitlyn, I own a house with fourteen bedrooms. I can survive without convincing you to occupy one."
She laughed.
Then leaned against him.
"Thank you."
They continued dating.
Darius spent weekends in her apartment.
He learned to cook in her tiny kitchen.
She visited his house when she wanted.
They took short trips.
Attended concerts.
Spent holidays with Tommy.
And gradually built a relationship that didn't depend on money or obligation.
One evening, Darius invited Caitlyn to a small gathering at his home.
Luca was there.
So was Tommy, accompanied by his rehabilitation aide.
Several friends from Caitlyn's new workplace had been invited.
Darius had prepared dinner himself.
Caitlyn suspected disaster.
She was pleasantly surprised.
After dessert, Tommy requested a song.
Darius played an old jazz recording.
Caitlyn smiled.
Then he turned toward her.
"Would you dance with me?"
She laughed.
"In front of everyone?"
"Only if you want."
She hesitated.
Then stood.
He took her hand.
They moved slowly across the living room.
No cameras.
No extravagant decorations.
No dramatic announcement.
Just music.
Friends.
And the quiet comfort of being loved.
Halfway through the song, Darius stopped.
Caitlyn looked up.
"What?"
He smiled nervously.
"There's something I want to ask."
Her heart skipped.
"Darius."
He reached into his pocket.
Luca muttered, "Finally."
Everyone laughed.
Darius ignored him.
He knelt on one knee.
Caitlyn covered her mouth.
For a moment, she couldn't breathe.
The man who once commanded rooms by simply standing now knelt before her.
Not because he was weak.
Because he wanted to ask rather than demand.
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a delicate gold ring with a pale blue sapphire.
"Caitlyn Elmore," he began, "the first time you fell asleep on my shoulder, I thought I was discovering how exhausted you were."
Her eyes filled.
"But what I really discovered was how little attention I'd paid to the people carrying my world."
He took a breath.
"You taught me that loyalty isn't endless sacrifice. That strength doesn't require silence. And that being trusted is worth more than being feared."
Caitlyn began crying.
Darius smiled through his own tears.
"I love your kindness. Your intelligence. Your stubbornness. The way you protect Tommy. The way you insist on reading every page of every document."
Everyone laughed.
He continued.
"I don't want you to become part of my empire."
His voice softened.
"I want to build a life beside you. One where you're free to be yourself."
He held up the ring.
"Will you marry me?"
Caitlyn looked at him.
She remembered forty-six hours without sleep.
The private jet.
The cold fear of waking against his shoulder.
The way he'd silenced the cabin.
The messages threatening Tommy.
Her mother's letter.
The investigation.
The courtroom.
Every difficult choice that had brought them here.
Then she smiled.
"Yes."
Darius froze.
"Yes?"
She laughed through tears.
"Yes, you ridiculous man. I'll marry you."
He stood and pulled her gently into his arms.
The room erupted in applause.
Tommy's communication tablet announced loudly:
ABOUT TIME.
Everyone burst out laughing.
Darius kissed Caitlyn.
May you like
And for the first time in his life, the man who had once been feared by an entire city was grateful simply to be chosen.
