Chapter 4 - THE FIRE THAT NEVER ENDED

Darius Hamilton had been twenty-seven when his father died.

Officially, Richard Hamilton suffered a heart attack while visiting a warehouse damaged by fire.

The investigation found no evidence of criminal involvement.

Darius inherited the family businesses shortly afterward.

He also inherited enemies.

Debts.

Unfinished agreements.

And a criminal organization that expected obedience from its new leader.

At the funeral, Marcus Bell stood beside him.

Marcus was only thirty then.

His younger brother Elias had died in the same fire.

Two families.

Two funerals.

One shared tragedy.

Darius had trusted Marcus ever since.

Now he stood inside his father's old office, looking at a photograph taken eleven years earlier.

Richard Hamilton smiled beside a loading dock.

Elias Bell stood nearby holding a clipboard.

In the background, Warehouse Seventeen rose against a cloudy sky.

Darius had never noticed the person standing near the doorway.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

Blue coat.

She looked strangely familiar.

Luca entered.

"Marcus isn't answering."

Darius placed the photograph down.

"Find his last known location through lawful company records."

"Already working on it."

"And the warehouse?"

"The property records are a mess."

Darius looked up.

"Explain."

"According to the city, the original building was demolished. But the underlying parcel was transferred through several shell companies."

"Who owns it now?"

Luca hesitated.

"That's the interesting part."

Darius waited.

"The current listed owner is the Elmore Family Trust."

Silence.

Darius stared at him.

"Elmore?"

"Yes."

"Caitlyn's family?"

"Possibly."

Darius looked back at the photograph.

The young woman in the blue coat.

Dark hair.

Familiar eyes.

He picked up the picture.

"Find out who that is."

Luca examined it.

Then frowned.

"She looks like Caitlyn."

"Exactly."

An hour later, they identified her.

Marianne Elmore.

Caitlyn's mother.

She had worked as a financial auditor for Hamilton Enterprises eleven years earlier.

Darius remembered her vaguely.

A quiet woman who asked too many questions.

She resigned shortly after the warehouse fire.

Two years later, she died from cancer.

Darius sat down.

The connection seemed impossible.

Caitlyn had never mentioned her mother working for his family.

But he'd never asked.

He knew she could type ninety words per minute.

He knew she remembered every investor's birthday.

He knew she took care of her brother.

He knew almost nothing about the family that raised her.

Luca studied the old personnel records.

"Marianne filed an internal complaint six weeks before the fire."

Darius leaned forward.

"About what?"

"Unreported inventory. Suspicious insurance valuations. Payments to outside contractors."

Darius's pulse accelerated.

"Who reviewed it?"

Luca looked at the signature.

"Marcus Bell."

Darius closed his eyes.

Another betrayal.

Another warning ignored.

Another person who might have known too much.

"Was my father aware?"

"We don't know."

Darius studied Marianne's photograph.

Then asked, "How did the Elmore family end up owning the property?"

Luca turned another page.

"A transfer agreement dated three months after the fire."

"Signed by whom?"

"Richard Hamilton."

Darius went still.

"My father was dead."

Luca nodded.

"Exactly."

The room seemed to lose its air.

Someone had forged his father's signature after his death.

Someone had transferred a valuable parcel to a family whose auditor had raised financial concerns.

And eleven years later, Marcus Bell was trying to bring the property back into Hamilton Enterprises through an eighty-two-million-dollar acquisition.

Darius stood.

"Get Caitlyn on the phone."

Luca hesitated.

"She's with her brother."

"I know."

"She's supposed to be resting."

Darius looked toward the photograph.

For the first time, he understood why someone had worked Caitlyn into exhaustion.

She wasn't merely his secretary.

She might be connected to evidence buried inside his father's empire.

And Marcus had spent months making sure she wouldn't notice.

Darius picked up his phone.

Then stopped.

Caitlyn had already sacrificed enough.

He didn't want to drag her into another crisis without giving her a choice.

Instead, he sent a message.

I discovered a connection between your mother and an old company property. There may be important information about your family's history. When you're rested, I'd like to explain. You can bring your own attorney.

He placed the phone down.

Luca raised an eyebrow.

"That was unusually considerate."

Darius ignored him.

Five minutes later, Caitlyn replied.

My mother worked for your company?

Darius stared at the screen.

She hadn't known.

He typed:

Yes.

Another message appeared.

Mr. Hamilton, my mother left me a locked metal box before she died.

His heart began pounding.

Then Caitlyn added:

May you like

It has your father's name written on the bottom.
