Chapter 15 - THE BOY WHO LAUGHED AGAIN

The wedding took place in the Romano garden the following spring.
It was small.
Family.
Friends.
Maria.
Tony.
Rosy.
And the people who had helped Luca through the hardest year of his life.
Emily wore a simple ivory dress.
Vincent stood beneath a flower-covered arch.
Luca wore a tiny navy suit.
He carried the rings.
Before the ceremony, Emily knelt beside him.
“Nervous?”
Luca shook his head.
Then smiled.
“Daddy is.”
Emily laughed.
“Really?”
Luca nodded.
“He keeps fixing his tie.”
Emily looked toward Vincent.
He was, indeed, adjusting his tie.
Again.
She smiled.
“Sounds about right.”
The ceremony began.
Luca walked down the aisle.
He stopped halfway.
Looked at the guests.
Then announced:
“I'm the ring boss!”
Everyone laughed.
Vincent covered his face.
Emily nearly cried from laughing.
When she reached the altar, Vincent took her hand.
“You look beautiful.”
She smiled.
“You look nervous.”
He laughed.
“I am.”
Their vows were simple.
Vincent promised to love Emily honestly.
To listen.
To be present.
To build a home where nobody had to hide their feelings.
Emily promised to love Vincent.
To respect Catherine's memory.
And to care for Luca without trying to erase the mother he had lost.
When they kissed, Luca cheered.
The guests applauded.
At the reception, Vincent stood to make a toast.
He looked toward his son.
Then toward Emily.
“Four hundred and twelve days,” he began.
The room quieted.
“For four hundred and twelve days, my son didn't speak.”
His voice trembled.
“I thought I'd lost him.”
He looked at Emily.
“Then a waitress handed him a green crayon.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“She didn't ask him to talk.”
“She didn't ask him to be brave.”
“She didn't ask him to stop missing his mother.”
Vincent smiled.
“She just drew a ridiculous dragon.”
The guests laughed softly.
He continued.
“And my son laughed.”
Luca stood beside him.
He looked up.
“Daddy?”
Vincent smiled.
“Yes, buddy?”
Luca took his hand.
Then said:
“Mommy would like Emily.”
The room went silent.
Vincent's eyes filled.
Emily covered her mouth.
Luca continued.
“She makes us happy.”
Vincent knelt and hugged him.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“She does.”
Later that evening, Emily stood beside the garden fountain.
The lights glowed.
Music drifted through the warm air.
She remembered the first day at Rosy's.
The quiet little boy.
The exhausted father.
The green crayon.
The ridiculous dragon.
She had never imagined that a simple drawing could change so many lives.
Vincent approached.
“Everything okay?”
She smiled.
“Perfect.”
He wrapped an arm around her waist.
Luca ran toward them.
“Family picture!”
Vincent laughed.
“Right now?”
Luca nodded.
“Right now.”
Tony lifted his phone.
Emily stood beside Vincent.
Luca squeezed between them.
“Say cheese!”
Tony called.
Luca grinned.
“BROCCOLI DRAGON!”
Everyone burst out laughing.
The camera flashed.
And this time, when the photograph was printed, Vincent didn't hide it away.
He placed it in the hallway.
Beside Catherine's photographs.
Beside the beach pictures.
Beside the memories that had once been too painful to face.
Because love hadn't replaced grief.
May you like
It had made room for life again.
And the little boy who had once stopped speaking now filled the house with laughter.
