Chapter 7 - Breaking the Accomplice

At 9:30 AM, Gregory Mercer sat in his corner penthouse office on the 42nd floor of the Michigan Avenue Financial Center, sipping an espresso while reviewing his company's falsified balance sheets.
His private line buzzed.
"Mercer," he answered smoothly.
"Gregory... it's me," Vanessa's recorded voice came through the speaker, carefully coached by federal agents standing around her in the tactical van parked three blocks away. "Adrian is at the hospital with the baby. Clara was taken into police custody. The trust rider was found in Adrian's study—I have the signed copies."
Mercer let out a long, triumphant sigh. "Brilliant. Bring them up to my office through the private freight elevator. The notary is waiting. Once we execute the offshore transfer, we wire the money to Zurich."
"I'm downstairs now," Vanessa said.
Five minutes later, the double doors of Mercer's office swung open.
It wasn't Vanessa who walked in.
It was eight armed FBI SWAT agents in tactical gear, weapons drawn, accompanied by Agent Vance and Detective Morales.
"Federal agents! Put your hands on your head and step away from the desk!"
Mercer froze, his coffee cup slipping from his hand and shattering on the glass table.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Mercer blustered, attempting to stand with an air of indignant wealth. "Do you know who I am? Call my attorneys immediately!"
Agent Vance walked forward, slamming a search warrant and federal indictment directly onto Mercer's desk.
"Gregory Mercer, you are under arrest for Murder-for-Hire Conspiracy, Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, and Embezzlement," Vance announced.
Two tactical officers forced Mercer to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back and ratcheting heavy steel cuffs over his wrists.
