Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Estate

Who was G.M.?
Nathan and I spent the rest of the night cross-referencing corporate filings, investment portfolios, and the offshore insurance underwriter.
At 5:30 AM, the identity of G.M. hit like a physical blow.
Gregory Mercer.
Mercer was the senior managing partner at Mercer & Croft Asset Management—the firm that had managed my late wife’s family trust for nearly fifteen years. He was a trusted family friend who had attended Claire's funeral, hugged my daughters, and sat across from me at our annual holiday dinners.
"Mercer’s firm lost nearly forty million dollars in unhedged tech derivatives six months ago," Nathan discovered after pulling real-time regulatory filings. "He's facing a federal audit next month. He was about to be exposed for running a massive embezzlement scheme."
"He introduced Vanessa to me," I realized, the horror dawning on me in waves. "He brought her to the charity gala last winter. He insisted she was an art curator from Boston with high-society credentials."
"She wasn't an art curator," Detective Morales stated, walking back into the study with an FBI background printout. "Her real name is Vanessa Jenkins. She was an escort and grifter who did eighteen months in Florida for grand larceny under an alias four years ago. Mercer bailed her out, paid for her cosmetic surgeries, and placed her in your path like a guided missile."
The puzzle was complete.

Mercer needed my family's thirty-five million dollar trust fund to cover his massive corporate fraud before the federal auditors stepped in. With Emma dead and Olivia driven into psychiatric custody through manipulated grief, Vanessa would take control of the estate as my grieving spouse, funneling the entire trust straight into Mercer's offshore accounts.
They had planned the murder of my baby girl to balance a crooked ledger.
