Chapter 2 - The Freeze-Frame of Betrayal

The silence in the foyer was heavier than lead.
"Adrian... please, let me explain," Vanessa stammered, taking a trembling step backward. Her pristine voice, which had charmed my board of directors and whispered sweet promises in my ear for over a year, was now cracked and hollow. "The brakes... the brakes slipped. I was trying to grab it, but—"
"Don't speak," I said. My voice was dangerously quiet, a cold, vibrating fury that made even the air in the room feel thin. "Do not utter another word in this house."
I knelt down on the marble floor with Emma still clutching my neck. With my free arm, I reached out to Clara, taking her trembling, calloused hands in mine and pulling her to her feet.
"Clara," I choked out, looking into the eyes of the woman who had nursed my late wife through chemotherapy and shielded my daughters from heartbreak. "Forgive me. For one second, I doubted you. I will spend the rest of my life making that right."
Clara wiped a tear with the cuff of her cardigan, shaking her head gently. "You don't have to apologize, Mr. Adrian. You're a father trying to protect your children. But she... she is evil."
Olivia stood by the screen, her phone still raised. "I installed that camera two days ago, Dad," Olivia said, her young voice firm despite the tears shining in her eyes. "Ever since Mom died, I promised I would watch over Emma. Last week, I saw Vanessa leave the pool gate unlocked when Emma was crawling in the backyard. When I asked her about it, she told me I was imagining things. I knew she was waiting for a chance."
Vanessa’s eyes flared with sudden, unhinged malice toward my twelve-year-old daughter. "You little sneak! You've hated me from the day I moved in! You set this up to ruin me!"
"Get away from my daughters!" I roared, stepping in front of Olivia and Clara like an iron barrier. "You are finished, Vanessa."
I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed 911 directly.

"Chicago Police Department. What is your emergency?"
"My name is Adrian Sterling. I am at 742 Elmwood Manor," I spoke with icy clarity. "I have just witnessed an attempted murder of my eighteen-month-old daughter on our home security system. The perpetrator is detained in my foyer. Send units immediately."
