Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE BENEATH THE CHANDELIER

Two years later, Elena returned to the Moretti estate.
Not as a maid.
Not as an employee.
But as a guest.
The mansion looked different.
The staff seemed happier.
The atmosphere was lighter.
Margaret greeted her at the door.
“My dear girl.”
Elena hugged her.
Dante stood near the staircase.
He wore a dark suit.
But his expression was warm.
“Ready?” he asked.
Elena smiled.
“For what?”
He offered his hand.
“A surprise.”
He led her into the ballroom.
The chandeliers glowed.
White roses filled the room.
Soft music played.
Elena stopped.
“Dante?”
He turned toward her.
“Do you remember the last time you stood here?”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“You were carrying a tray.”
She laughed softly.
“And crying.”
Dante's expression softened.
“I remember.”
He took her hands.
“That night, I realized I'd spent my life protecting the wrong things.”
Elena swallowed.
“Money. Reputation. Power.”
He smiled.
“And I'd almost lost the one person who made me want to become better.”
He knelt.
Elena covered her mouth.
“Elena Carter.”
His voice broke.
“I can't promise that life will always be easy.”
He opened a small box.
Inside was a beautiful diamond ring.
Not enormous.
Not designed to impress strangers.
Simply elegant.
“But I can promise that I will never again ask you to make yourself smaller so I can feel powerful.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Will you marry me?”
Elena began crying.
“Yes.”
Dante stood.
She threw her arms around him.
May you like
He held her tightly.
And beneath the same chandelier where she'd once been humiliated, Elena Carter finally felt seen.
