Chapter 13 - THE LAST THREAT FROM VANESSA
Vanessa Bennett refused to accept defeat.
While awaiting trial, she attempted to manipulate the media.
She claimed Elena had seduced Dante.
That the engagement had been destroyed by a jealous employee.
That the allegations against her were fabricated.
Some people believed her.
Others didn't.
Elena tried to ignore the stories.
But one afternoon, a reporter approached her outside the clinic.
“Miss Carter, is it true you were romantically involved with Mr. Moretti while he was engaged?”
Elena froze.
Cameras flashed.
She looked toward the clinic doors.
Then back at the reporter.
“No.”
The reporter continued.
“Then why did the engagement end?”
Elena took a breath.
“Because the truth eventually matters more than appearances.”
She walked away.
The statement spread quickly.
Dante called her that evening.
“Are you all right?”
Elena smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
He hesitated.
“I can have my legal team handle the harassment.”
She nodded.
“I'd appreciate that.”
He paused.
“You don't have to fight everything alone.”
Elena looked out the window.
“I know.”
Then she smiled.
“But I also need to know I can stand on my own.”
Dante's voice softened.

And for the first time, Elena believed it completely.
