Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH INSIDE THE BLACK CAR

Alessandro returned to the hospital one month later.

Not as a patient.

As a visitor.

He had been medically cleared for light activity.

He walked slowly.

One hand rested against his side.

But he was alive.

Strong enough to smile.

I saw him near the main entrance.

He wore a black coat.

No visible bodyguards.

No dramatic entrance.

Just Alessandro.

“Emily.”

I stopped.

“Mr. Rossi.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Really?”

I smiled.

“Hospital habit.”

He stepped closer.

“Dinner?”

I stared.

“What?”

“Would you have dinner with me?”

I looked around.

Several nurses were pretending not to watch.

I lowered my voice.

“Alessandro, are you sure that's a good idea?”

“No.”

I blinked.

He smiled.

“But I'd like to find out.”

I agreed to coffee first.

Public place.

No security spectacle.

No expensive gifts.

He accepted every condition.

We met at a small café near the lake.

He ordered black coffee.

I ordered tea.

For twenty minutes, we talked about everything except his family.

Then I asked the question I'd been avoiding.

“What happened to Matteo?”

Alessandro looked down.

“The investigation is ongoing.”

I nodded.

“And Vanessa?”

“She and I are no longer engaged.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“Evidence suggests they were working together to gain control of certain businesses.”

“Were they involved in the shooting?”

His expression darkened.

“That's what investigators are trying to establish.”

I watched him carefully.

“Alessandro, I need to ask you something.”

He nodded.

“Anything.”

“Are you still involved in criminal operations?”

Silence.

His jaw tightened.

I didn't look away.

Finally, he said, “My family's history is complicated.”

I nodded.

“That wasn't my question.”

He stared at me.

Then smiled sadly.

“No.”

I waited.

He continued.

“I've begun separating myself from that part of the organization.”

I studied him.

“Beginning isn't the same as finishing.”

“I know.”

He looked toward the lake.

“I don't expect you to trust me because I say I've changed.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

He turned back.

“I expect to earn it.”

For the first time, I believed he understood what I needed.

Not power.

Not protection.

May you like

Not expensive promises.

Honesty.
