Chapter 10 - THE PROMOTION I ALMOST TURNED DOWN

My promotion arrived on a Monday morning.

Patricia called me into her office.

I expected another scheduling complaint.

Instead, she smiled.

“Emily, we'd like to offer you the position of ICU clinical educator.”

I stared.

“What?”

She laughed.

“You heard me.”

I sat down.

The position included better pay.

More responsibility.

And tuition assistance toward my advanced nursing degree.

For years, I had dreamed of becoming a nurse practitioner.

But rent, family obligations, and exhaustion had always pushed that dream farther away.

Now it was suddenly possible.

I called my mother first.

She cried.

Then Rachel.

She screamed.

Then Alessandro.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?”

“I got promoted.”

Silence.

Then:

“You did?”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

His voice warmed.

“I'm proud of you.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

That evening, Alessandro took me to dinner.

A small Italian restaurant.

No photographers.

No entourage.

He raised his glass.

“To Emily Carter.”

I laughed.

“That's dramatic.”

He smiled.

“To the woman who refuses to let anyone tell her what she's worth.”

My eyes filled.

Later, he asked about my classes.

My schedule.

My plans.

He listened carefully.

Then said, “I know you don't need me to make your dreams happen.”

I looked at him.

“Good.”

He smiled.

“But I'd like to cheer when they do.”

That was the moment I realized I was falling in love.

Not because he was powerful.

May you like

Not because he had money.

But because he was learning how to stand beside someone without trying to stand above them.
