The settlement offer arrived on a Tuesday.
My mother's attorney called me.
The companies involved had agreed to substantial compensation for the harm caused by the concealed safety violations.
I stared at the paperwork.
For years, money had been a constant fear.
Rent.
Medication.
Car repairs.
Groceries.
Now, suddenly, there was a possibility of breathing room.
But I couldn't stop thinking about my father.
No amount could bring him back.
My mother understood.
She took my hand.
"Your father would've wanted us to live."
I began crying.
She smiled through tears.
"He worked so hard because he wanted you to have choices."
I nodded.
And for the first time, I allowed myself to imagine a future that wasn't built entirely around surviving the next bill.
I paid off my debts.
Helped my mother move into a safer apartment.
And enrolled in a hospitality management program.
Adrian offered to help with tuition.
I refused.
He didn't argue.
Instead, he smiled.
"You're stubborn."
I laughed.
"You're just discovering that?"
He shook his head.
"No."

Then said quietly:
"It's one of the things I admire about you."
