Chapter 6 - THE TIP THAT BECAME A PROMISE

Two days later, Harper finally opened the shoebox.

She sat on her bedroom floor.

Bills spread around her.

Rent.

Nursing-home fees.

Car repairs.

She counted the money again.

Twenty-five hundred dollars.

Then she cried.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was tired.

She paid the overdue rent.

Made a payment toward her mother's care.

And scheduled the brake repair.

For the first time in months, she slept through the night.

The next Tuesday, Vincent returned.

Harper approached his table.

“Your usual?”

He nodded.

She placed a small envelope beside his glass.

He looked at it.

“What is this?”

“A thank-you note.”

Vincent opened it.

Inside was a handwritten card.

Thank you for giving me room to breathe. I still don't know why you did it. But I won't forget.

Vincent read it twice.

Then looked up.

“You didn't have to do this.”

Harper smiled.

“Neither did you.”

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he carefully placed the card inside his jacket.

Not in his wallet.

Not on the table.

Close to his heart.

May you like

And Harper realized the gesture mattered to him.

Perhaps more than the money had mattered to her.
