Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO SAW HIM BLEED

The attack happened outside Vincent's office.
A man approached him near the parking garage.
There was shouting.
A struggle.
Then a gunshot.
Vincent was wounded in the shoulder.
His security team restrained the attacker until police arrived.
Harper heard about it from Daniel, Vincent's attorney.
She rushed to the hospital.
When she entered his room, Vincent was sitting upright.
Pale.
Bandaged.
Trying to look annoyed.
“You shouldn't be here,” he said.
Harper stared.
“Are you serious?”
He smiled faintly.
“Hello to you too.”
She crossed the room.
Then slapped his uninjured arm.
“Ow.”
“You idiot.”
He looked surprised.
She burst into tears.
Vincent's expression softened.
“Harper.”
She shook her head.
“I thought you were dead.”
He reached for her hand.
“I'm here.”
She looked at him.
“Don't say that like it's guaranteed.”
He swallowed.
Then nodded.
“You're right.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Harper whispered:
“I care about you.”
Vincent's eyes filled.
“I know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I don't think you do.”
He looked at her.
She took a breath.
“I love you.”
Vincent went completely still.
Then his voice cracked.
“Harper.”
She smiled through tears.
“Don't make me say it twice.”
He laughed softly.
May you like
Then whispered:
“I love you too.”
