Chapter 14 - THE SECOND CHANCE HE DIDN'T DEMAND

Dante didn't ask me to move back into the penthouse.
Didn't send expensive gifts.
Didn't announce that we were destined to be together.
He simply showed up.
When he said he'd call, he called.
When he made plans, he kept them.
When he was wrong, he apologized.
When I needed space, he respected it.
And when I spoke, he listened.
Our relationship grew slowly.
We went to dinner.
Visited museums.
Walked through Brooklyn.
Cooked together.
Laughed.
Argued.
Made up.
Learned.
One evening, I invited him to my studio.
He stood before a painting of a woman walking away from a dark ballroom.
He stared.
“That's the night.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“Did you paint it in Boston?”
“Yes.”
He studied the canvas.
The woman was walking toward an open door.
Beyond it, sunlight spilled across the floor.
Dante smiled sadly.
“She looks free.”
I nodded.
“She is.”
He turned toward me.
“I'm glad.”
I stepped closer.
“Dante.”
“Yes?”
“I need you to understand something.”
He waited.
“If we try again, I won't give up my work.”
“I know.”
“I won't disappear into your life.”
“I wouldn't ask you to.”
“And I won't stay if you humiliate me again.”
His expression softened.
“You shouldn't.”
I looked at him.
“I'm serious.”
“So am I.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Dante took my hand.
“Elena, I don't want the old marriage back.”
My throat tightened.
He continued.
“I want the chance to build something different.”
I looked at him.
“And if it doesn't work?”
He swallowed.
“Then we'll be honest.”
I smiled through tears.
Then stepped closer.
“Okay.”
His eyes widened.
“Okay?”
I laughed.
“One step at a time.”
He smiled.
“One step at a time.”
Then he kissed me.
May you like
Not like a man reclaiming something that belonged to him.
Like a man grateful to be chosen.
