Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN HE MET AGAIN

A year passed.

Then another.

My life became full in ways I hadn't imagined.

I traveled for exhibitions.

Painted.

Taught.

Spent weekends with Olivia and her husband.

Made new friends.

Built a home that reflected my own tastes.

And stopped measuring my happiness against the life I'd once expected.

Dante and I occasionally crossed paths.

At charity events.

Gallery openings.

Mutual friends' celebrations.

We were polite.

Warm.

Careful.

There was affection.

But no expectation.

Then one evening, I received an invitation to a fundraising dinner for a children's arts program.

The event was held at a small community center in Brooklyn.

I had donated several paintings.

Dante had contributed funding through a foundation.

Neither of us knew the other would be there.

I arrived wearing a blue dress.

He stood near the entrance.

When he saw me, he smiled.

“Elena.”

“Dante.”

He looked at my paintings.

“These are wonderful.”

I laughed.

“You've said that before.”

“I keep meaning it.”

We spent the evening talking.

Not about our marriage.

Not about the past.

About the children.

The program.

The importance of giving young people space to create.

Dante told me he'd begun mentoring young business owners.

I told him about a student who had sold her first painting.

We laughed.

At the end of the evening, he walked me outside.

The air was cool.

The streetlights glowed.

He stopped.

“Elena.”

I looked at him.

“Yes?”

“Would you like to have coffee sometime?”

I smiled.

“We just spent three hours talking.”

He laughed.

“I know.”

Then he grew serious.

“I mean coffee. As two people who know each other.”

I considered.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

We met the following week.

Then again.

And again.

Slowly, cautiously, we began discovering who we had become.

Not who we'd been.

Not who we'd wanted each other to be.

Who we actually were.

One afternoon, Dante asked:

“Do you think people can fall in love twice?”

I looked at him.

“With the same person?”

He nodded.

I considered.

“Maybe.”

He smiled faintly.

“Maybe?”

I laughed.

“But only if they're not trying to recreate the first time.”

May you like

Dante nodded.

“Agreed.”
