Chapter 11 - THE DIVORCE PAPERS HE DIDN'T EXPECT

I returned to New York in early autumn.

The city smelled of rain and roasted chestnuts.

Olivia met me at the station.

She hugged me so hard I nearly dropped my suitcase.

“You look different.”

I smiled.

“I feel different.”

Two weeks later, I met Dante at a quiet restaurant.

He stood when I approached.

For a moment, we simply looked at each other.

He seemed older.

Not dramatically.

Just quieter.

Less certain.

More human.

“Elena.”

“Dante.”

We sat.

Ordered coffee.

Talked about Boston.

The paintings.

His work.

Then I reached into my bag.

And placed a folder on the table.

His expression changed.

“What is that?”

I took a breath.

“Divorce papers.”

Silence.

Dante stared at the folder.

Then looked at me.

“Is this what you want?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

His face went pale.

For a moment, I thought he'd argue.

Demand.

Threaten.

Beg.

Instead, he nodded.

“Okay.”

I stared.

“Okay?”

His voice broke.

“If this is what you need, I won't fight you.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Dante.”

He looked down.

“I love you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“But love doesn't erase what I did.”

Silence.

“And I won't punish you for choosing yourself.”

We discussed the practical details.

Property.

Finances.

Legal representation.

I insisted on independent counsel.

He agreed.

We worked toward a fair settlement.

No public spectacle.

No threats.

No games.

When the meeting ended, Dante stood.

He looked at me.

“Can I ask you one thing?”

I nodded.

“Do you regret marrying me?”

The question broke something inside me.

I looked at the man I'd loved for eight years.

Then answered honestly.

“No.”

His eyes filled.

“I regret how we stopped loving each other properly.”

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

“Me too.”

We left separately.

May you like

And for the first time, I understood that ending a marriage did not mean the love had never been real.

It meant the marriage had become something neither of us could continue living inside.
