Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE THAT STOPPED BEING AFRAID

The criminal investigation took more than a year.
Paul Mercer was arrested.
Cassandra Vale was extradited to face charges connected to the financial conspiracy.
Adrian Voss cooperated with investigators.
Vivien faced legal consequences for her role in threatening Elena and assisting the scheme.
The proceedings were complicated.
Some charges resulted in convictions.
Others required further investigation.
But the conspiracy that had haunted our family for years was finally exposed.
I stepped away from the family's criminal operations.
It wasn't easy.
There were threats.
Financial losses.
People who believed I was betraying my father's legacy.
But I was tired of watching fear pass from one generation to the next.
I reorganized our legitimate businesses.
Cooperated with oversight.
And severed relationships that depended on violence or illegal transactions.
Rocco remained beside me.
He had made mistakes.
He'd kept secrets.
But he had not betrayed Gabriel.
We rebuilt trust slowly.
My mother began smiling again.
She spent afternoons with Mia.
Taught her to bake.
And told her stories about Gabriel as a little boy.
Mia loved every one.
Elena completed her nursing degree.
Gabriel found work helping manage a legitimate logistics company.
They rented a house near the coast.
Small.
Bright.
Full of windows.
And laughter.
One afternoon, they invited me for dinner.
Mia opened the door.
“UNCLE LORENZO!”
I lifted her into my arms.
“Hello, little bird.”
She grinned.
“Guess what?”
“What?”
“Mommy and Daddy are getting married!”
I froze.
Then looked toward the kitchen.
Elena stood beside Gabriel.
Both smiling.
My eyes filled.
Gabriel approached.
“Brother.”
I hugged him.
“Congratulations.”
He laughed.
“About time, right?”
I smiled.
“Only four years late.”
Their wedding took place in the garden behind their house.
Mia carried the rings.
My mother cried.
Rocco stood beside me.
And Gabriel looked at Elena as though she were the most extraordinary woman in the world.
When the ceremony ended, Mia ran toward me.
“Uncle Lorenzo!”
I knelt.
“Yes?”
She whispered:
“Everybody's happy.”
I looked around.
My brother.
His wife.
Their daughter.
My mother.
Friends.
Family.
People who had survived things I once thought would destroy us.
I smiled.
“Yes, little bird.”
May you like
I hugged her.
“Everybody's happy.”
