Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO MET HIS DAUGHTER

Gabriel met Mia three days later.

We arranged the meeting carefully, with Elena's agreement and support from a child psychologist familiar with reunification after prolonged separation.

Mia was told that someone important wanted to meet her.

Someone who loved her before she was born.

Gabriel waited in the garden.

He wore a simple blue sweater.

His hands trembled.

I'd never seen him so nervous.

Then Elena appeared.

Mia walked beside her, holding Captain Buttons.

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Elena knelt beside Mia.

“Sweetheart, remember what we talked about?”

Mia nodded.

She looked at Gabriel.

Then whispered:

“Daddy?”

Gabriel's face crumpled.

He knelt.

“Yes, little bird.”

Mia studied him.

“Are you my daddy?”

He nodded through tears.

“Yes.”

She looked at Elena.

“Mommy?”

Elena smiled through tears.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Mia turned back toward Gabriel.

Then asked:

“Why were you gone?”

Gabriel swallowed.

He looked at Elena.

Then back at his daughter.

“I couldn't come home for a long time.”

Mia frowned.

“Were you lost?”

He nodded.

“In a way.”

She considered this.

Then held out Captain Buttons.

“Uncle Lorenzo found you?”

Gabriel looked toward me.

I smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

Mia nodded.

“Good.”

Then she stepped forward and hugged him.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

He held her gently.

And cried.

Elena watched from a few feet away.

Her hands covered her mouth.

Gabriel looked up.

“Elena.”

She stepped closer.

For a moment, they simply stared.

Four years.

Four years of fear.

Loss.

Silence.

Then Gabriel stood.

And Elena walked into his arms.

I turned away.

Some reunions belonged to the people who had survived them.

That evening, my mother met Gabriel.

She stood in the doorway.

Saw him.

And froze.

“Gabriel?”

He smiled through tears.

“Hello, Mama.”

Isabella collapsed into his arms.

She sobbed against his chest.

He held her.

And whispered:

“I'm home.”

For the first time in years, the Duca mansion felt like a home instead of a fortress.

But the danger wasn't over.

Cassandra Vale remained free.

Adrian Voss had disappeared.

And Vivien was still refusing to tell investigators everything she knew.

Then Daniel Mercer arrived with news.

“Lorenzo, we found the financial records Gabriel was protecting.”

I looked up.

“And?”

Daniel swallowed.

“They implicate someone else.”

My chest tightened.

“Who?”

He looked toward the family gathered in the sitting room.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Your father wasn't the only Duca involved.”
