Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO LEARNED TO STAND TALL

Elena had spent years trying to disappear.

She'd changed jobs.

Moved apartments.

Hidden her daughter's identity.

And learned to keep her eyes lowered around powerful people.

Now she stood in my study, holding a folder of documents.

“Lorenzo?”

I looked up.

“Yes?”

“I want to leave my job.”

My chest tightened.

I stood.

“Of course.”

She looked surprised.

“You're not angry?”

I shook my head.

“Why would I be?”

She swallowed.

“Because I've worked here for two years.”

I smiled gently.

“Elena, you don't owe this family your labor.”

Her eyes filled.

“I want to go back to nursing.”

I grinned.

“Then you should.”

She looked down.

“I never finished school.”

I nodded.

“Then finish.”

She hesitated.

“I don't want charity.”

I smiled.

“Neither do I.”

She looked confused.

I continued.

“The family has a scholarship fund for employees and their families. It has independent criteria. You can apply like anyone else.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Thank you.”

Over the next year, Elena returned to school.

Gabriel began rebuilding his life.

He received support for the trauma he'd endured and gradually reconnected with his daughter.

Their relationship was not instantly perfect.

Four years of separation could not be erased by one reunion.

But they worked at it.

Patiently.

Honestly.

Together.

Mia remained her cheerful, curious self.

She loved picture books.

Strawberries.

And making me sit through elaborate tea parties.

One afternoon, she placed a plastic crown on my head.

“Uncle Lorenzo, you're the king.”

I laughed.

“Am I?”

She nodded.

“And Daddy is the dragon.”

Gabriel grinned from the doorway.

“Why am I the dragon?”

Mia considered this.

“Because you're tall.”

Gabriel laughed.

I looked at him.

For years, I'd believed I would never hear that laugh again.

Now it filled the garden.

One evening, Elena found me sitting alone on the terrace.

She approached quietly.

“Lorenzo?”

I looked up.

“Yes?”

She smiled.

“I wanted to thank you.”

I shook my head.

“You don't have to.”

She sat beside me.

“For listening to Mia.”

I looked toward the garden.

The little girl was chasing butterflies.

I smiled.

“She was very persuasive.”

Elena laughed.

Then her expression softened.

“She knew you'd protect us.”

My throat tightened.

I looked at her.

“I wish she'd never needed to.”

May you like

Elena nodded.

“So do I.”
