Chapter 3 - THE WAITRESS WHO KNEW SILENCE

Emily Carter had learned early that silence wasn't always emptiness.

Sometimes silence was protection.

Sometimes it was fear.

Sometimes it was the only place a frightened person felt safe.

Her younger brother, Noah, had stopped speaking for almost six months after their father died.

Emily had been nineteen.

Noah had been eight.

Their mother worked double shifts at a nursing home, leaving Emily to help him through homework, nightmares, and the terrible quiet that followed the funeral.

She had learned not to demand words.

She had learned that a child could communicate through drawings, gestures, or simply sitting beside someone who didn't insist on answers.

Eventually Noah began speaking again.

But Emily never forgot how frightened he'd looked when adults tried to force him.

Now, in Rosy's kitchen, she saw the same fear in Luca Romano.

He sat on a stool beside the prep counter, clutching his green crayon.

Rosie, seventy-two and still running the diner with the authority of a retired general, placed a cookie beside him.

“Fresh from the oven,” she said.

Luca didn't touch it.

Emily pulled up another stool.

“You know,” she said, “I used to draw houses when I was little.”

Luca glanced at her.

“Always the same house. Blue door. Yellow windows. Big tree.”

She smiled.

“My brother said my trees looked like broccoli.”

A tiny movement crossed Luca's face.

Not quite a smile.

But close.

Emily took a napkin and drew a ridiculous tree.

“See? Broccoli.”

Luca looked down.

Then picked up his crayon.

He drew a green line beneath her tree.

Emily nodded.

“Grass. Good choice.”

He added a small figure.

A woman.

Then a boy.

Then a black car.

His breathing quickened.

Emily didn't ask what the picture meant.

She simply placed another napkin beside him.

“You can draw whatever you want.”

Luca drew a door.

Then a red square.

Then three small circles.

Emily watched carefully.

The circles looked like buttons.

An elevator panel, perhaps.

Or something else.

She didn't know.

But when Luca finished, he pointed at the woman.

His lips moved.

Emily leaned closer.

“It's okay.”

Luca whispered one word.

“Mommy.”

Emily felt her throat tighten.

She didn't smile too widely.

Didn't praise him for speaking.

She only said, “You miss her.”

Luca nodded.

A tear slid down his cheek.

Emily reached for a clean napkin.

He took it.

Then he whispered, “She was scared.”

Emily's heart broke.

Before she could respond, the kitchen door opened.

Vincent stood there.

May you like

His face was pale.

He had heard everything.
