Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT EMILY WAS FOLLOWED

Emily noticed the gray car on a Thursday evening.

It had been parked across from Rosy's when she finished her shift.

When she walked toward the bus stop, it moved.

Slowly.

Keeping pace.

Her stomach tightened.

She crossed the street.

The car turned.

She stopped outside a pharmacy.

The car stopped too.

Emily called Vincent.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?”

“I think someone's following me.”

His voice changed.

“Where are you?”

She gave him the intersection.

“Go inside the pharmacy. Stay somewhere public. I'm calling the police.”

Emily obeyed.

Within minutes, officers arrived.

The gray car disappeared before they could identify the driver.

Vincent arrived shortly afterward.

His expression was controlled.

But his eyes were furious.

“Are you hurt?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

He exhaled.

“Good.”

She looked at him.

“Is this because of Luca?”

Vincent hesitated.

“We don't know.”

Emily folded her arms.

“Don't protect me by lying.”

He looked at her.

Then nodded.

“You're right.”

He explained the investigation.

Anthony Bell.

Marco Romano.

The stolen money.

The possibility that Catherine had been murdered.

Emily listened in silence.

When he finished, she whispered:

“Luca saw it.”

Vincent nodded.

“He saw enough to be frightened.”

Emily's eyes filled.

“That poor boy.”

Vincent looked away.

“I should never have asked you to get involved.”

Emily stepped closer.

“You didn't make me care about him.”

He looked at her.

She continued.

“I cared because he needed someone to sit beside him without asking him to be different.”

Vincent swallowed.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said:

“I won't let anyone hurt you.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then help the police stop them.”

May you like

Vincent nodded.

“I will.”
