Chapter 10 - THE GIRL WHO NEVER DISAPPEARED

Evelyn Hart had not disappeared.
She had changed her name.
Moved to Vermont.
And begun working at a small community center.
Investigators located her.
She agreed to speak after learning that Marco was under investigation.
Her story changed everything.
Annie Bell had survived the fire.
Evelyn had helped her escape.
But Evelyn had believed that the Duca estate itself was compromised.
She feared that anyone connected to Valentino could lead the criminals back to Annie.
So she hid the girl.
Used legal protective channels where possible.
And severed contact with the family.
Valentino listened to the recorded interview.
His hands shook.
"Where is Annie now?"
Gabriel looked at him.
"Safe."
"Can I see her?"
"That decision belongs to Annie and her guardians."
Valentino nodded slowly.
For the first time, he understood that helping someone did not mean controlling their choices.
Annie was now twelve.
She lived with a foster family who loved her.
She attended school.
Played soccer.
And had begun rebuilding her life.
When investigators explained that the triplets remembered her, Annie cried.
She asked whether the girls were alright.
Several weeks later, with professional support and careful preparation, Annie agreed to exchange letters with them.
Her first letter was simple.
Dear Luna, Stella, and Nova,
I remember the garden. I remember the fountain. And I remember holding your hands.
You were very brave.
I am safe now.
I hope you are safe too.
Love, Annie.
Becca read the letter aloud.
The girls listened.
Then Nova whispered:
"Annie."
Luna began crying.
Stella reached for the paper.

For the first time, their memories were connected to something other than fear.
They were connected to survival.
