Chapter 6 - THE MEDICINE CABINET SECRET

Adrian didn't sleep that night.

He sat beside Luca's crib until dawn.

Every time the baby moved, Adrian leaned forward.

Every tiny sound made his heart race.

He had spent his life believing money could solve almost anything.

But money hadn't protected Isabella.

And it hadn't protected Luca.

The independent medical review uncovered a troubling pattern.

Several medication orders attributed to Dr. Whitmore lacked proper documentation.

Some records contained conflicting instructions.

A pharmacy audit identified discrepancies requiring formal investigation.

Adrian's attorneys contacted the appropriate authorities.

The hospital preserved relevant records.

Emma was not involved in collecting evidence.

She had made that boundary clear.

“I'm not a detective,” she told Adrian. “And I don't want to become one.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

But the investigation brought something unexpected.

An attorney contacted Emma.

Her name was Rebecca Sloan.

She had represented another former St. Catherine's nurse.

“Miss Carter,” Rebecca said, “I believe your case may be connected to a broader pattern.”

Emma sat very still.

“What pattern?”

“Staff members who reported medication discrepancies were disciplined or dismissed.”

Emma's throat tightened.

“There were others?”

“At least three.”

Emma closed her eyes.

For two years, she had believed she was alone.

Rebecca continued.

“We're reviewing whether the hospital failed to investigate legitimate safety concerns.”

Emma whispered, “I told them something was wrong.”

“I know.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Nobody listened.”

Rebecca's voice softened.

“Someone is listening now.”

That evening, Emma visited the Moretti estate.

Adrian met her in the library.

She looked shaken.

“There were other nurses.”

He nodded.

“I heard.”

Emma sat down.

“They lost their jobs too.”

Adrian crouched in front of her chair.

“I'm sorry.”

She looked at him.

“I thought I was crazy.”

He shook his head.

“You weren't.”

Emma began crying.

Adrian hesitated.

Then asked, “May I?”

She nodded.

He put his arms around her.

May you like

She leaned into him.

For the first time in two years, Emma let herself believe that the truth might finally matter.
