Chapter 11 - THE BILLIONAIRE'S FALL

The investigation into Victor Bellini's handling of the adoption records and estate documents continued for months.

Attorneys reviewed the original trust provisions.

Investigators examined financial transfers.

Former employees provided testimony.

Eventually, evidence emerged that Victor had interfered with the adoption process and later attempted to conceal the existence of the second twin.

He had also withheld information relevant to the estate.

Civil proceedings began.

Regulators and law enforcement reviewed possible misconduct connected to the documents.

Victor denied wrongdoing.

He called the allegations a misunderstanding.

A family dispute.

An attempt to exploit his daughter's death.

But the evidence continued to grow.

One afternoon, Helen called me.

"Elina, we have a breakthrough."

I sat down.

"What happened?"

"The court has ordered the production of additional estate records."

My heart pounded.

"Does that mean we can prove what happened?"

"It means we'll finally have access to documents Victor resisted producing."

Weeks later, the records confirmed that Isabella's adoptive mother had intended to provide for both twins if the second child was identified.

The financial consequences were substantial.

But when Helen explained the potential inheritance, I barely listened.

I was thinking about Isabella.

About the little girl who had held my hand.

About the woman who had spent her life searching for me.

About the letter she never mailed.

Victor eventually agreed to a court-supervised settlement resolving the estate claims, while separate investigations into the document irregularities continued.

His public reputation suffered.

His business partners distanced themselves.

But I didn't celebrate.

Money could not give me back the sister I'd lost.

It could only help me honor what she had wanted.
