Chapter 14 - THE LIFE SHE BUILT WITHOUT HIM

A year after Leo's birth, my design studio had grown into a successful business.

I employed four people.

Worked with clients across Manhattan.

And had recently completed my first major commercial project.

I was proud.

Not because the business was worth millions.

But because I'd built it myself.

Leo was thriving.

He loved picture books.

Hated peas.

And had developed a habit of laughing whenever Sofia sneezed.

Dante remained involved in his life.

We communicated respectfully.

Made parenting decisions together when necessary.

And kept our personal history separate from Leo's needs.

It wasn't always easy.

But it worked.

One afternoon, Sofia visited my studio.

She looked around at the fabric samples, sketches, and framed photographs.

“Look at you.”

I smiled.

“What?”

“You're happy.”

I nodded.

“I am.”

She hugged me.

“I'm proud of you.”

I looked toward the window.

For years, I had believed my happiness depended on Dante.

Now I knew better.

May you like

My happiness depended on the life I chose to build.

And I had finally chosen myself.
