Chapter 8 - THE FILE DANIEL LEFT BEHIND

Three days later, Evelyn received a letter.
It was addressed in Daniel Mercer's handwriting.
Inside was a note.
If you're reading this, I didn't make it.
Evelyn sat down.
Her hands trembled.
The letter continued.
I don't know who I can trust. But I know you tried to help me.
There is something wrong with the Halcyon Tower project.
The inspection reports were altered.
I kept copies.
My wife knows where.
Evelyn stared.
At the bottom was one sentence.
Please tell Rebecca I wasn't imagining it.
Evelyn called Detective Reyes.
He arranged to receive the letter and contacted Rebecca Mercer.
Rebecca arrived at the station with a small metal box.
Inside were engineering reports.
Photographs.
Email correspondence.
And a flash drive.
The documents showed serious discrepancies between original inspection findings and the reports submitted to city authorities.
Several structural components had failed testing.
The final reports claimed they'd passed.
The financial records suggested that Victor Sloane had authorized payments to contractors who certified work they hadn't properly inspected.
Detective Reyes looked through the documents.
Then said:
“This changes everything.”
Evelyn stared at the box.
“Daniel knew.”
Reyes nodded.
“And he tried to stop it.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
She remembered his final words.
Tell my wife I tried.
Now she understood.
He hadn't simply been asking her to deliver a goodbye.
He'd been asking someone to remember that he had fought.
May you like
And Evelyn made a promise.
She would.
