Victor Sloane returned to Chicago six weeks later.
Not openly.
Not with lawyers.
With a plan.
He contacted several former associates and attempted to move money through accounts investigators hadn't yet frozen.
He also tried to intimidate witnesses connected to the Halcyon investigation.
But the authorities were watching.
Detective Reyes coordinated with federal investigators.
Financial records.
Phone communications.
Witness statements.
All pointed toward Victor.
Then one evening, Evelyn received another message.
You should have stayed out of this.
She stared at the screen.
Her heart raced.
But this time, she didn't freeze.
She called Detective Reyes.
Then Adrian.
Within hours, investigators traced the communication to a property Victor had been using.
He was arrested during a coordinated operation.
The charges included offenses related to the intimidation scheme, financial misconduct, and the broader conspiracy under investigation.
Evelyn watched the news from her apartment.
Margaret sat beside her.
Adrian stood near the window.
When the report ended, Evelyn exhaled.
“Is it over?”
Adrian looked at her.
“The investigation isn't over.”
She nodded.
“But Victor can't keep threatening us from the shadows.”
He sat beside her.
“No.”
Evelyn leaned against his shoulder.
For a moment, she simply breathed.
Then she whispered:
“I'm tired.”
Adrian kissed her hair.
“I know.”
She smiled faintly.
“Don't tell me to sleep.”
