Mercer wasn't acting alone.
The investigation revealed that several employees inside Shore Enterprises had helped conceal suspicious transactions.
Some had been bribed.
Others had been threatened.
A few had knowingly participated.
Gideon was furious.
But he didn't order revenge.
He ordered an independent audit.
He suspended implicated executives.
He turned over records.
And he accepted that investigators would examine his own activities.
Silas, his operations chief, approached him one evening.
“Boss.”
Gideon looked up.
“What?”
“People are saying you've gone soft.”
Gideon stared.
“Are they?”
Silas nodded.
“They think you're letting the police tear apart the company.”
Gideon looked toward the office door.
Tessa stood outside, speaking quietly with Detective Ruiz.
He turned back.
“Then let them think it.”
Silas frowned.
“Boss—”
Gideon's voice hardened.
“I built this company to make money.”
He paused.
“Not to help men destroy children.”
Silas fell silent.
