Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT GIDEON BROKE HIS OWN RULES

Gideon Shaw had rules.

Never trust anyone completely.

Never expose weakness.

Never let personal feelings interfere with business.

And never involve the police unless there was no alternative.

That night, he broke the last rule.

He called Detective Elena Ruiz.

A woman who had spent years trying to bring down his organization.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Shaw?”

“Detective.”

Her voice hardened.

“What do you want?”

“I have evidence of a trafficking operation.”

Silence.

Then she said, “Is this a joke?”

“No.”

“Why are you calling me?”

Gideon looked at Tessa.

“Because a child is in danger.”

Ruiz's voice changed.

“Where?”

Gideon gave her the details Tessa had provided.

Then added, “I have records that may identify victims and financial transactions.”

Ruiz paused.

“Don't move anything else. Preserve the evidence.”

Gideon nodded.

“Understood.”

He ended the call.

Tessa stared.

“You called the police.”

“Yes.”

“You hate the police.”

Gideon looked at her.

“I hate what Mercer is doing more.”

Her eyes filled.

For the first time, she believed she might survive.
