Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO LEARNED TO STAY

Adrian began spending Saturdays with the boys.
At first, I stayed nearby.
We went to parks.
Museums.
Basketball games.
And once, to a disastrous cooking class where Adrian burned pasta.
Ethan declared the result scientifically unacceptable.
Leo laughed so hard he fell off his chair.
Noah tried not to smile.
But he did.
Gradually, the boys became comfortable around him.
Adrian learned their routines.
He attended parent-teacher conferences.
He helped Ethan build a model bridge.
He taught Noah how to ride a bicycle without training wheels.
And he sat beside Leo while the boy cried over an injured bird.
One afternoon, I watched them through the kitchen window.
Adrian was kneeling in the backyard.
Leo stood beside him holding a small cardboard box.
Inside was a sparrow with a damaged wing.
Adrian listened carefully as Leo explained what the veterinarian had said.
Then he nodded.
“We'll make sure it has everything it needs.”
Leo looked up.
“Promise?”
Adrian smiled.
“Promise.”
And I realized something.

He wasn't trying to impress them anymore.
He was simply learning how to love them.
