Chapter 10 - THE EMPIRE THAT COULDN'T PROTECT HIM

The incident changed everything.

Eleanor faced legal consequences.

Adrian removed her access to his residences, businesses, and family arrangements.

He also began examining the world he had built.

The private security teams.

The constant surveillance.

The men who obeyed him without question.

He had spent years believing power meant control.

But when Noah disappeared, none of that power had prevented his son from being frightened.

One evening, Adrian came to my apartment.

He looked exhausted.

“Can we talk?”

I nodded.

The boys were asleep.

We sat at the kitchen table.

He looked around.

At the mismatched chairs.

At the school drawings on the refrigerator.

At the little ceramic bowl Leo had made in art class.

Then he whispered:

“You built a beautiful life.”

I smiled sadly.

“It wasn't easy.”

“I know.”

“No, Adrian.”

I looked at him.

“You don't.”

He lowered his eyes.

I continued.

“There were nights I skipped dinner so the boys could eat.”

His face changed.

“Claire—”

“There were winters I worked two jobs and still worried about rent.”

He closed his eyes.

“I should have been there.”

“Yes.”

The word hung between us.

Then I said:

“But I made a choice too. I didn't tell you.”

He looked up.

“I understand why.”

“That doesn't make it right.”

He was silent.

I took a breath.

“We both lost something.”

Adrian's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Then he whispered:

“But the boys shouldn't have to keep paying for it.”

I nodded.

May you like

“No.”

And for the first time, we began discussing the future instead of fighting over the past.
