Chapter 15 - THE GIRL WHO SAW WHAT EVERYONE MISSED

Five years after Enzo's murder, Dante stood inside the Enzo Rizzo Community Kitchen.

The building was full of laughter.

Children carried trays.

Volunteers served soup.

And the walls displayed photographs of the people whose lives had been changed by the organization.

Gabriel was thirty-five.

His bakery had become a neighborhood favorite.

Marisol was Dante's wife.

Sofia was thirteen.

And Dante was no longer the man who believed fear could solve every problem.

He had spent years facing the consequences of his past.

Rebuilding legitimate businesses.

Repairing relationships.

And learning that family loyalty meant telling the truth, even when it hurt.

On the anniversary of Enzo's death, Sofia approached him carrying her old composition notebook.

Its cover was worn.

The corners were bent.

But the pages remained carefully preserved.

“Dante?”

He smiled.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Do you remember this?”

He looked at the notebook.

His throat tightened.

“Of course.”

Sofia opened it.

On the first page was the drawing of Enzo's crooked painting.

The gold frame.

The crack in the plaster.

The little red sailboat.

“I used to think being observant was just a weird thing about me,” she said.

Dante looked at her.

“It's not weird.”

She smiled.

“I know.”

Then she turned the page.

There was a new drawing.

It showed Enzo standing outside his apartment holding a paper bag of pastries.

Underneath, Sofia had written:

HE WAS KIND WHEN NOBODY WAS WATCHING.

Dante stared.

His eyes filled.

Sofia looked up.

“Do you think he knows we found out the truth?”

Dante swallowed.

“I hope so.”

She nodded.

“Me too.”

Then she hugged him.

He held her tightly.

Across the room, Marisol stood beside Gabriel.

They were laughing about something.

The smell of fresh bread filled the kitchen.

Outside, Lake Michigan shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.

Dante looked toward the mural.

The red sailboat seemed to float across the painted water.

Five years earlier, he had entered his brother's apartment looking for someone to punish.

He had expected enemies.

Weapons.

Betrayal.

Instead, he found an eight-year-old girl with a notebook.

A brass key.

A secret hidden for thirty years.

And the truth about the family he'd spent his life defending.

He had lost Enzo.

Nothing would ever change that.

But he had found Gabriel.

He had found Marisol.

He had found Sofia.

And somewhere along the way, he had found the courage to become someone his little brother would have recognized.

Sofia stepped back.

“Dante?”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

He smiled.

“Always.”

She looked thoughtful.

“Do you think little things really matter?”

Dante glanced toward the mural.

Then toward the old notebook.

“Yes,” he said.

She smiled.

“How much?”

Dante knelt beside her.

“Sometimes, sweetheart, they change everything.”

Sofia hugged him again.

May you like

And for the first time in years, Dante Rizzo felt something he had never been able to buy, threaten, or command.

Peace.
