Chapter 14 - THE QUESTION BENEATH THE RED SAILBOAT

Dante proposed to Marisol two years later.

By then, he had withdrawn from the criminal organization that had shaped his adult life and was cooperating with legal authorities regarding his own past conduct.

His legitimate businesses operated under independent oversight.

Marisol continued working as a respiratory therapist.

Sofia was thriving at school.

Gabriel's bakery had reopened.

And Dante had finally begun building a life that didn't depend on fear.

The proposal happened beside the community kitchen mural.

Sofia helped arrange it.

That was Dante's first mistake.

She told Marisol three days beforehand.

“Don't wear your old shoes on Saturday.”

Marisol frowned.

“Why?”

Sofia looked horrified.

“No reason.”

On Saturday evening, Dante stood beneath the painted sailboat holding a small velvet box.

Marisol approached.

She looked from him to Sofia.

Then laughed.

“Oh, you two.”

Dante lowered himself onto one knee.

“Marisol Vega.”

Her eyes filled.

“When I met you, I thought being powerful meant being untouchable.”

He smiled sadly.

“You taught me that real strength means letting people see who you are.”

He opened the box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

“Will you marry me?”

Marisol nodded.

“Yes.”

Sofia screamed.

“I KNEW IT!”

Dante laughed.

Marisol laughed through tears.

And beneath the painted sailboat, a family began another chapter.
