Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH BROKE ME

I didn't leave my apartment for two days.

Rebecca called.

Tony from the diner called.

Nathaniel called.

I ignored everyone.

On the third morning, someone knocked.

I opened the door.

Nathaniel stood outside holding two paper bags.

“Breakfast,” he said.

I stared.

“I'm not hungry.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

He placed the bags on the small table.

Then sat on the sofa.

I folded my arms.

“Are you going to tell me to get over it?”

“No.”

I stared.

“Are you going to say Daniel wasn't worth it?”

“No.”

I looked down.

“Then why are you here?”

Nathaniel paused.

“Because someone should be.”

My eyes filled.

I sat beside him.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then I whispered:

“He never loved me.”

Nathaniel looked at me.

“I don't know what he felt.”

I shook my head.

“He used me.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“That much seems clear.”

I wiped my face.

“I feel stupid.”

He turned toward me.

“Emma.”

I looked up.

“Trusting someone isn't stupidity.”

My lips trembled.

He continued.

“Using someone's trust is the shameful part.”

I began crying.

Nathaniel didn't touch me until I leaned toward him.

Then he wrapped one arm around my shoulders.

I cried into his sweater.

For Daniel.

For the months I'd wasted.

For my mother.

For the job I'd lost.

For the future that suddenly seemed impossible.

Nathaniel held me.

Quietly.

Without trying to turn my pain into something useful.

When I finally stopped, he handed me a tissue.

I laughed weakly.

“You're not very good at comforting people.”

He smiled faintly.

“I'm learning.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Because you matter.”

My heart shifted.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once.

But enough that I noticed.

I looked away.

“That's dangerous.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes.”

He stood.

“I should go.”

I looked up.

“Why?”

He paused.

“Because you're hurting, Emma. And I don't want you mistaking relief for love.”

I stared.

No man had ever said something so careful to me.

Nathaniel smiled faintly.

“When you're ready to see me without needing rescue, I'll still be here.”

May you like

Then he left.

And for the first time, I began to understand the difference between being chosen and being respected.
