Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE BENEATH THE MOUNTAINS

A year after the Blackridge Gala, Nathaniel invited me to a small gathering at his mountain home.

I hesitated.

“Another gala?”

He laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

It was a dinner.

Twelve people.

Friends.

Family.

Rebecca Hayes.

And a few colleagues Nathaniel trusted.

The evening was warm.

Simple.

Full of laughter.

After dinner, Nathaniel asked me to walk outside.

Snow covered the mountains.

The sky was clear.

He led me toward a wooden terrace overlooking the valley.

I smiled.

“It's beautiful.”

He nodded.

Then he grew quiet.

“Emma.”

I looked at him.

He took my hands.

“A year ago, I walked into a ballroom and saw a woman sitting alone.”

I smiled faintly.

“I remember.”

He continued.

“I thought I was helping you escape humiliation.”

He shook his head.

“But you ended up changing my life.”

My eyes filled.

He smiled.

“You taught me that strength doesn't have to be cruel.”

I swallowed.

“And that love doesn't have to be a transaction.”

He reached into his pocket.

My heart stopped.

Nathaniel lowered himself onto one knee.

“Emma Parker, will you marry me?”

Tears ran down my face.

I thought about the woman I'd been at table nineteen.

Heartbroken.

Ashamed.

Afraid.

Then I looked at the man kneeling before me.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Nathaniel smiled.

“Yeah?”

I laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

He stood and wrapped his arms around me.

I kissed him.

Behind us, someone cheered.

Rebecca.

Of course.

I laughed.

Nathaniel groaned.

“She promised not to watch.”

I smiled.

“She's a lawyer. She knows how to interpret promises.”

We laughed.

And beneath the Wyoming stars, I finally understood what it meant to be chosen without being diminished.
